Chief Minister N Biren Singh has announced that the ongoing violence in Manipur, which erupted in May 2023, has resulted in 226 deaths. The conflict, which has caused widespread devastation, has also led to the displacement of nearly 60,000 people and the destruction of over 11,000 homes.
In a press conference held on Tuesday, CM Singh provided a comprehensive update on the situation, highlighting the extensive impact on the state’s infrastructure and populace. He reported that 5,554 farmers have been significantly affected due to the violence, which has disrupted agricultural activities and compounded the humanitarian crisis.
The violence, primarily concentrated in the hill districts of Manipur, has forced thousands to seek refuge in 302 relief camps set up by the state government. These camps are currently housing approximately 60,000 displaced individuals, providing them with essential supplies and temporary shelter.
“The scale of the destruction is unprecedented,” stated CM Singh. “We are doing everything in our power to ensure that the affected families receive the support they need during these trying times.”
The Manipur government has mobilized resources to provide immediate relief and support to those affected. This includes the distribution of food, water, and medical supplies, as well as financial assistance to help rebuild destroyed homes. CM Singh emphasized that the government is committed to restoring normalcy and aiding in the rehabilitation of displaced persons.
In addition to emergency aid, efforts are underway to support the education and healthcare needs of those in relief camps. Educational materials have been distributed to ensure that children can continue their studies despite the displacement. Medical teams are also stationed at the camps to provide necessary healthcare services.
The violence has had a severe impact on Manipur’s agricultural sector. With 5,554 farmers reporting significant losses, there is growing concern over food security and the long-term economic impact on the state. The government is working on measures to support affected farmers, including financial aid and initiatives to restart agricultural activities.
“We are particularly concerned about the impact on our farmers,” said CM Singh. “Their livelihoods have been severely disrupted, and we must ensure they receive the necessary support to recover and rebuild.”
The state government is collaborating with various non-governmental organizations and community groups to provide comprehensive support to those affected. Long-term plans include the reconstruction of homes, restoration of agricultural lands, and the establishment of permanent housing for displaced families.
CM Singh concluded his address with a call for peace and unity. “We urge all communities to come together and work towards restoring peace in Manipur. The path to recovery will be challenging, but with collective effort, we can rebuild and emerge stronger.”
The violence in Manipur remains a critical issue, with the state government and various organizations working tirelessly to address the immediate needs of the affected population and lay the groundwork for long-term recovery and stability.
